On April 1, 2006, Toyooka City was merged with five villages in the northeastern part of Hyogo Prefecture (Toyooka City, Kinosaki Town, Takeno Town, Hidaka Town, Izushi Town, Tanto Town). Approximately 80% of the city area is forested, with the Sea of Japan to the north, Kyoto Prefecture to the east, Maruyama River (the origin of all things) flowing through the central part, Sanin Coast National Park on the coastal area, and Hyonosen Ushiroyama Nagisan National Park in the mountainous area.
